SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION TECHNIQUES.
THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY

SEO TECHNIQUES

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is difficult, it is time-consuming and depending on how well optimised a competitors website the longer it takes for tangible results to be noticed.

There are several different techniques that can be used and they can be pigeon holed into 3 categories white hat, black hat and grey hat. Breed Creative Solutions only advocate white hat techniques and will never use grey or black hat techniques on our clients websites.

WHITE HAT

White hat techniques are the kind of techniques that search engines like to see. Depending on the strength of competitors optimisation the results from using these techniques may take some time before they become known. The benefit of using these techniques is that you will never be removed from the Google index for employing them on your site. White hat is so called because a search engine will never penalise a site for using them and they get there name from childrens games and spaghetti westerns where the good guys would wear white hats. White hat techniques involve no practices and techniques where the site tries to artificially increase a websites search engine ranking by attempting to deceive users and the search engines. White hat techniques generally involve writing content for the users rather than the search engines and ensuring that search engines can easily index the site content.

GREY HAT

Grey hat techniques are so called because they fall in-between white hat and black hat techniques. Grey hat techniques can later down the line become black hat techniques also they can in the future become white hat techniques although it is highly unlikely that these techniques would become white hat.

Using grey hat techniques can increase search engine rankings faster than white hat techniques but their overuse or incorrect use can penalise a search engine ranking and damage the sites reputation. Cloaking and paid links are examples of grey hat techniques.

BLACK HAT

Black hat techniques are so called because they are dangerous to a sites search engine rankings and when a site is caught using these techniques they will be removed from the search engines until the issues are corrected.

Black hat techniques often will move a site up the search engine rankings quicker than either grey hat and white hat techniques. The sole purpose of black hat techniques is to deceive and fool both users and search engines of the content within a site. The use of these techniques if lucky will have short term benefits but if a website is caught using these techniques they will be penalized and constant use of these techniques will ultimately lead to the site being permanently removed from the search engines index. The following techniques are classed as black hat techniques keyword stuffing, hidden text and doorway pages and the only reason they are listed here is so they are identifiable to you when a SEO company mentions there use as part of an SEO campaign.
